Africa, Democracy, Clime, Cities
The exhibition Running on, empty – Africa, Democracy, Cities, curated by the art historian Eleni Gatsa, invites the public to confront the challenges of contemporary societies, in Greece and internationally. Five Greek artists, Kleoniki Maragkou, Lena Morfogeni, Panagiotis Nezis, Sofia Papadopoulou and Katerina Rimpatsiou through their most recent work, explore the insights, motivations and dynamics of the ineffective attempts to manage a world that relentlessly flows and changes around us, without changing anything.
The five artists, with strong imagery and symbolism, reflect through their works the contradictions and environmental, social and democratic challenges in rural and urban areas worldwide, exploring issues of environmental sustainability and social participation in an era where artificial intelligence is changing the way democracies and environmental movements are at stake.
Through paintings and sculptures, the artists explore the notion of repulsion, hope, finite availability of resources and internal contradictions, seeking the meaning and essence that permeate the human experience. Running on, empty, creates a dialogic bridge between art and society, awakening and encouraging visitors to explore the works and perceive the multiple dimensions that emerge from the sense of emptiness.
